How To Order Vegan Food At A Non Vegan Restaurant
As the days go by, more and more restaurants have vegan options, and some even with a separate vegan menu. But if you ever find yourself in an unfamiliar place or a restaurant with no vegan options, here are 4 quick tips to help you order a vegan meal:
1. SHOP FROM THE SIDES
Mix and match from the different side dishes to make your own plate. A few sides like sauteed veggies, mashed potatoes, side salad, a cup of rice, and a side of beans can easily add up to make a balanced meal.
2. SUBSTITUTE
If your dish comes with a side of meat, ask for boiled corn or mushrooms instead. Or if the dish has butter on it, ask for a drizzle of olive oil. Some restaurants will be willing to make these substitutes and if not, ensure that the portion that needs to be substituted isn’t the main portion of the dish.
3. SUBTRACT
Ideally, it’s easier to order from a vegetarian menu where you can simply tell your server to hold the dairy and other non-vegan ingredients. Or you can also order a meat dish and ask for the meat to not be added. For example, you can order the pasta with the red sauce without the meatballs or a chicken sandwich without the chicken.
4. PLAY SAFE
If you don’t prefer meal customization, you can play safe and order salient vegan dishes like soup, French fries, roasted veggies, or a salad without dressing.
Always remember to look up the restaurant and their menu beforehand, and don’t be afraid to ring them up and ask if they can customize your meal as per your preferences.
